BoJack Horseman

3033285-inline-i-6-bojack-horseman-add-onNetflix gives its customers a new Original Series starring Will Arnett as BoJack Horseman, a washed up celebrity who just happens to be a horse.

BoJack Horseman was once a star in Nineties sitcom ‘Horsin’ Around’ and is now nothing but a shadow of his former fame. Drugs, drink and partying has had its toll and in this half-human half-animal world, BoJack tries to reclaim some of his former fame.

Will Arnett does a great job in bringing some pathos to this wholly unlikely character, who becomes rather endearing by the end. The periphery characters also feel very well thought out and allow for some funny moments, but over the course of its 12 episode run, it just doesn’t have those real laugh out loud moments that it should have.

That’s not to say it’s not funny. I binged watched them all and really enjoyed it, but I only actually laughed a handful of times and works more on one-liners than it does on jokes surrounding the plot. It works the same way Archer does and shares a lot of its humour, but the washed up celeb idea has been done before and done better.

It does have some great ideas, some engaging storylines, talented cast and I loved the animation but couldn’t help but end up thinking ‘meh’. It’s entertaining but never out-and-out funny, but it is something different and hats off to Netflix for taking some more brave choices in their Original Series content.

Worth a watch, but nothing that will rock your world.
