The trailer has landed for Kevin Macdonald’s Black Sea which stars Jude Law as a submarine captain who takes a scavenging job from a questionable backer which, going by the trailer, causes much consternation between himself and his crew.

It would be a fair assessment of Macdonald’s career, since his breakthrough hit, The Last King of Scotland, to say his output has been somewhat inconsistent with State of Play, The Eagle and How I Live Now all being well cast, in parts solid and mostly unspectacular to leave a slightly forgettable body of work.

Next up is Black Sea which has the excellent ensemble cast including Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Tobias Menzies and Michael Smiley headed up by Jude Law putting on an impressive Scottish accent and anytime anyone dons a Scottish accent on screen gives the film automatic bonus points in my book.

It looks an impressive enough deep-sea thriller and the cast are all able to lift this above the B-movie fare of which it whiffs. Here’s the trailer and Black Sea should be hitting cinemas in December…
